Using the National Library of Medicine’s Household Products Database, I searched the Softsoap antibacterial liquid hand soap and the original Mr. Clean magic eraser. Prior to learning the actual health effects of both items, I had a good instinct of where they might stand on the hazardous to non-hazardous scale, thus I was not surprised with the search results for these household items. I agree with the minimally hazardous ratings across the board for the soap and the slightly to moderately hazardous ratings for the magic eraser. With the hand soap being used frequently and presenting minimal health risks, I don’t anticipate changing products or even brands. Seeing the results of its health effects only confirmed that this is an effective product and holds little to none negative health effects. On the other hand, the magic eraser is seldom used and only for especially tough cleaning needs (mainly in the bathroom). Given this, I’m not too concerned with the rare usage of this product. I'll continue to limit my use of this product. However, I’m very appreciative to be more aware of its potential acute and chronic health effects for me and my family, as well as learning ways to navigate any first aid needs. I may opt for more natural cleaning products as an alternative upon disposing of the last sponge in the package.
Since the items listed above are very common products, health risks should be openly known to all consumers. However, it may be useful for manufacturers and retail stores to alert buyers of their potential health hazards through the packaging. For instance, these warnings can better inform young families, teachers in classroom settings with young children, as well as parents and other individuals who care for young children. I believe people are aware of the general risks of using these items, but not the full extent of the health risks. Additionally, many people don’t read all the instructions or warnings on product packaging or don’t know to access resources that can provide more detailed information as to how one’s health and those in their circles may be affected.

Hi Nica, I am glad that your liquid soap does not pose much of a health threat. A label with health risks associated with the product should be available. I like that you mention teachers and young families because of the exposure children would experience.
ReplyDeleteHi Nica, it is refreshing to see your appreciation of being more knowledgeable for the shared products with your family. I like the recommendation of increasing awareness for all consumers.
